If you want to know what the smartest money in the world is doing, do not listen to what central banks say. Watch what they buy.
The numbers
According to the World Gold Council, central banks bought more than 1,000 tonnes of gold a year in 2022, 2023 and 2024, the fastest pace on record. In 2025 they added a further 863 tonnes, still far above the historical norm, and over half of that buying was undisclosed at the time it happened. Quiet, deliberate accumulation.
Why it matters
These are the institutions that issue the world's currencies. They can print pounds, dollars and euros at will. Yet when it comes to their own reserves, they are choosing an asset that cannot be printed. Gold carries no counterparty risk, sits outside any other country's banking system and cannot be frozen or sanctioned. After 2022, when Western nations froze Russia's currency reserves, that lesson was not lost on anyone.
The signal for private investors
Central banks do not trade for quick wins. They position for decades. When the biggest players in finance steadily convert paper reserves into physical gold, private investors would be wise to at least understand the reasoning. In the UK, you can follow the same logic with an added advantage: legal tender coins such as the Britannia and Sovereign are completely free of Capital Gains Tax.
