Every nation has a flagship bullion coin. America has the Eagle, South Africa the Krugerrand, Canada the Maple Leaf. Britain's is the Britannia, and its story explains a great deal about why it remains our best-selling coin.
Born in 1987
The Royal Mint launched the Gold Britannia in 1987 to give Britain a modern one-ounce bullion coin of its own. The figure of Britannia herself is far older: she has personified the nation on coinage since Roman times, and has appeared on British coins for over three centuries as a symbol of strength and integrity.
Refined over time
Early Britannias were struck in 22 carat gold. In 2013 the Royal Mint upgraded the coin to 999.9 fine gold, matching the purest bullion standards in the world. Modern Britannias also carry some of the most advanced security features on any bullion coin: a latent image that changes between a padlock and a trident, micro-text, and radial sunburst lines that make counterfeiting extraordinarily difficult.
Why investors choose it
The Britannia combines global recognition with a benefit unique to UK investors. As sterling legal tender with a £100 face value, any gain you make when selling is completely free of Capital Gains Tax. One ounce of pure gold, instantly recognisable to any dealer on earth, with a tax treatment few assets in Britain can match. That is a difficult combination to beat.
