When you buy a British gold coin, you are relying on institutions with more history than almost any other in finance. It is worth knowing who they are.
The Royal Mint
The Royal Mint has been striking Britain's coinage for over 1,100 years, with a history stretching back to Alfred the Great in 886. Once housed in the Tower of London, it operates today from Llantrisant in South Wales and is owned entirely by HM Treasury. When you hold a Britannia or a Sovereign, you hold a coin produced by the state itself, which is precisely why these coins qualify as legal tender and enjoy their Capital Gains Tax exemption.
The LBMA
The London Bullion Market Association sets the standards for the global wholesale gold market. Its Good Delivery List defines which refineries meet the bar for purity and integrity, and London remains the centre of world gold trading. When dealers quote you a price, the metal behind it traces back to LBMA standards.
Where the spot price comes from
The famous London gold price has been set since 1919, when the first gold fixing took place. Today it is run as the LBMA Gold Price, an electronic auction held twice every business day, which anchors the live spot price you see moving on our website. That number reflects genuine global supply and demand, tonne by tonne, minute by minute.
