How to Sell Gold

Gold is one of the most liquid assets on earth. Selling well is mostly about knowing what a fair quote looks like, and UK coins make the tax side wonderfully simple.

In short: Recognised coins sell in a day. Dealers quote a percentage of the live spot price; a fair buyback sits close to it. Gains on Britannias and Sovereigns are Capital Gains Tax free, so what you are quoted is what you keep.

Where to sell

An established dealer is the normal route: you get a live quote, post the coins fully insured or bring them in, and payment lands in your account once they are verified, often the same day. We buy back everything we supply at a fair, live market valuation, and offer same-day quotes on our sell gold page. Avoid high-street cash-for-gold counters, whose offers are typically far below market.

Understanding the quote

A quote is a percentage of the spot value of your coins' gold content. Recognised bullion coins in good condition command the strongest percentages because dealers can resell them instantly. If a quote is vague, or the buyer cannot tell you the live spot price it is based on, walk away.

Sell only what you need

Coins let you liquidate in stages: one Sovereign or one Britannia at a time, leaving the rest of the holding intact. This is where the divisibility you chose at purchase pays off.

The tax on the way out

For UK legal tender coins there is none on the gain: no Capital Gains Tax, nothing to report, however well the coins have done. It is the quiet advantage that makes the whole journey clean, and it is covered fully in Is gold CGT free?
