Gold Academy · Lesson 12

What Happens If Gold Falls?

An honest lesson, because gold does fall sometimes, and anyone selling it as a one-way bet is not being straight with you.

In short: Gold's price moves down as well as up, sometimes for years at a stretch. Falls have not changed what the metal is: your coins remain the same weight of gold, fully yours, ready for the long term they were bought for. The owners who struggle are the ones who bought for a quick gain.

Falls happen, and history shows both sides

After 1980, gold spent two decades drifting lower. After 2011 it fell heavily and took years to recover. Anyone holding through those periods needed patience. The same history also shows the other side: those who held through the falls saw the metal go on to reach new highs. Neither half of that story is a promise about the future.

What a fall does not change

A price fall changes the number, not the thing. Your Britannia still contains one ounce of 999.9 fine gold. It has no management that can fail, no debt to default, cannot go to zero like a share and still buys what an ounce buys around the world. This is why serious owners treat falls as noise within a long-term holding rather than as failure.

How owners protect themselves

Three habits do most of the work: buy in stages so no single day's price defines your position, hold gold as a sensible portion of wealth rather than the whole of it, and commit to a horizon of years before you begin. Money you may need next summer does not belong in gold.

Our position

We would rather lose a sale than have you buy on the wrong expectations. Read how much gold should I own?, take your time, and buy only when the long-term case makes sense to you.
